Seven months after its closure, Game Informer is back online and with its full team of writers and editors, picking up where they left off.
The magazine is considered one of the prestigious in the games industry, paired with exclusive month-long coverage of upcoming titles. It closed unexpectedly last year, after thirty-three years in the business by parent company GameStop. The termination came as a shock to those within the industry and as well as the company itself, with the sudden firing of all staff members and the removal of all their work from the website and industry.
After coming back online, the team has been busy filling up their news page with brand-new coverage, with a letter explaining their surprise comeback at the top. “How did this all happen? After first touching base with our team and ensuring our interest, the team at Gunzilla Games secured the rights to Game Informer. From the start, the new owners insisted on the idea of Game Informer remaining an independent editorial outlet; they felt just as strongly as our team did that the only path forward was with an editorial group that made 100 percent of the decisions around what we cover and how we do so, without any influence from them or anyone else.”
They continue, explaining that “Game Informer now operates under an entity called Game Informer Inc., and our intent is to continue to focus on highlighting the coolest games, celebrating the history and legacy of the gaming industry, and shining a spotlight on the creators and players who are charting its future.”
Throughout Game Informer's long history, they are perhaps best known for their exclusive month-long coverage of upcoming games. Both Quantum Break and Control were the subjects of those spotlights in recent years, which saw gorgeous and custom-made artwork grace the covers, and in-depth interviews and analysis filling the pages.
