Today it was announced that the visionary director and writer, David Lynch, has passed away. Perhaps best known for his work on Twin Peaks and Dune, the creator not only pushed the boundaries of his own work, embracing experimentation and mixing mediums, but also inspired other artists to do the same.
The news was shared by his family through the artist's Facebook page to his 1.3 million fans. They wrote, “it is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.' It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”
Those that stepped into Bright Falls, could feel the inspiration that Lynch had on the adventure, particularly with Twin Peaks. While the original game was inspired by the mysterious small town vibe and quirky characters, the sequel was heavily influenced by the third season, which took on a darker tone. The series was also filled with nerdy Easter eggs and nods to Lynch and his work, from the lamp lady (log lady) to the Oh Deer Diner (Double R Diner). His name was also mentioned directly in the chapter song, Lost at Sea, in the lyrics, “Lynch catching fish is a recurring theme”.
While the project as a whole had taken inspiration from him, someone who was particularly inspired by Lynch's work was Remedy's Creative Director, Sam Lake, who posted a tribute via Twitter and Bluesky,”I’m shocked and very sad. David Lynch has been a huge inspiration to me and a huge influence on my work. Rest in peace.”. In a follow-up post, he also revealed that “the @remedygames internal code name for Alan Wake 2 was ”Big Fish”. I think David Lynch is swimming with the big fish now. Rest in peace. His influence goes far and wide and will live on.”
On Bluesky, Alan Wake writer, Mikko Rautalahti also wrote, “David Lynch had a hell of a career. I cannot begin to tell you how much of an impact he had on me and creative folks like me.” Both Sam and Mikko formed the original writing team at Remedy, working on the original Alan Wake.
