While Remedy wasn't among the nominations at The Game Awards this year, the show wasn't without a studio-themed twist. Presenting the award for Best Narrative was Sam Lake (Remedy's Creative Director) who approached it with an Alex Casey nudge, but that wasn't his only duty while in the States. Below is a quick wrap-up of The Game Awards side of things!
Ahead of the ceremony itself, GameSpot held a pre-show event, inviting developers and actors onto their sofa to nerd out about the previous twelve months. Kicking off the show, was an interview with Sam, Neil Newborn (Actor, Baldur's Gate III), Alix Wilton Regan (Actor, Perfect Dark) and Abubakar Salim (Actor & Game Director, Tales of Kenzera: Zau). In their conversation, they talk about their success at last year's show and what keeps going after a tough year in the industry. You can watch the discussion in full on the GameSpot YouTube channel, HERE (timestamped at 32:10).
Now, let's get to the show! At The Game Awards, Sam was invited to present the award, on stage, for Best Narrative.
Taking to the stage, accompanied by POE's This Road, Sam's twist began as he reached the microphone, triggering the broadcast to enter a greyscale filter. In a pre-recorded internal voice-over, he reads, “I was back at The Game Awards. It felt like a loop. I had lost track of how many times I've been here. How many awards I'd won. Something kept nagging at me, forcing me to snap out of my revelry. I was here to do a job. Hand out the award for Best Narrative. The nominees were each incredible, frankly I was so impressed by the storytelling genius, I was overcome by a massive fit of jealousy. But they never need to know that, play it cool. On the stage, I felt an urge to dance, that's what they all wanted. Hmm, I'll save it for another time. Keep this short.” The screen returns to colour as he speaks into the microphone, “here are the nominees for Best Narrative.”
For this year, the Best Narrative nominees were Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Metaphor: Refantazio, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Silent Hill 2.
