Now, this piece is gaming news is an interesting one! Last week, Apogee delved into their archives and shared a never-before-seen prototype, created by Remedy, after the release of Death Rally.
Remedy and Apogee began a partnership during the development of Death Rally, a top-down racing game that would task players with upgrading their car to take on The Adversary. Their debut soon put Remedy on the map. According to Hugi, a magazine which focuses on the Demoscene, the title sold over 120,000 copies, a massive achievement for the start-up company in 1996.
"Death Rally, back then, was a hit," Sam Lake described in The Story of Remedy documentary. "And we were definitely going to other games, we knew that." Several prototypes were created as possible next project ideas and shown to Apogee, including Dark Justice, a concept that would evolve into Max Payne.
Though prototypes tend to be usually discarded or have elements recycled later, it's rare to see a full recording, especially after so much time has passed.
The video was originally posted on Twitter under the Apogee account, with the caption, "When @remedygames visited Apogee in 1997, they pitched three projects: Void, Dark Justice, and a racing game. @JoeSiegler found a VHS tape of the Void demo, and we digitized it. It's in bad shape, but it's still worth showing!" Check out the full recording below...
