Sixteen months after launching, Smilegate has officially closed down servers for CrossfireX, cutting access to both the multiplayer and Remedy's single-player experiences.
The decision was originally announced on the Smilegate website in early February, just ahead of the game's first anniversary. Unusually, the move would also remove access for players who have purchased the Operation Catalyst and Operation Spectre story mode packs, which Remedy had been working on as part of a collaboration linking back to 2016.
In the original letter signed by the CrossfireX Team, the organisation revealed, "It is with the deepest regret that we are informing you of our decision to end support for CrossfireX on May 18, 2023. Since the launch of the game, we have worked tirelessly to bring it to a point where we can all be proud, and throughout it all we have had the honor and pleasure of supporting our players.
"Coming to this decision was not easy, however, we can proudly say that our players have been amazingly active, passionate and enthusiastic in working with us to create a game that would be fun and enjoyable by all. We want to thank each and every one of our players for playing CrossfireX and being a part of this journey with us."
Following the announcement, Smilegate halted purchases on Xbox One, refunded purchases made within the past fourteen days, and announced that no more content will be added to the game.
Fortunately, while most of Remedy's catalogue is still playable, CrossfireX joins Agents of Storm for lost adventures. In recent weeks, we've done our best to archive as much as we can from the two story mode campaigns, and we'll continue to add more to the site in the coming months for those who had missed out on the adventure.
Thank you to all the incredible people that worked on this title!
