Community Spotlight: Kate's Alan Wake Concoctions

Community Spotlight is a regular feature which highlights amazing fan projects in the Remedy community. For 2018 we're switching things up a little with each month having its own spotlighted fan and fan project. This month I'm excited to talk to Kate about her Tumblr blog dedicated to geeky drinks, drinkyourfavouritecharacter!

If you're an active member of Tumblr you may have noticed that, over the past few weeks, drinkyourfavouritecharacter's unique Alan Wake-themed concoctions have been pouring into the game's tag on Tumblr. The blog is an interesting concept which uses games, shows and characters as inspiration to make a variety of different beverages. The recipes feel authentic to the character's they're based on, using the character's backstory, attitudes or behaviours to influence the ingredients. The site is run by the lovely Kate, a twenty-two year old gamer from Russia who uses the site to channel her geeky interests and favourite games and shows.

I first heard about the blog slightly before their Alan Wake content through Katerina (@SeaCat2401) who discovered the site from their Layers of Fear posts. Katerina shared the recipes on Twitter and Discord, and hoped that the blog would cover the Alan Wake characters next. I don't know if the two ever spoke, or if it was just a wonderful coincidence but shortly after that the game was selected to be the new focus for a wide selection of themed drinks. At first the main characters were spotlighted on the drinkyourfavouritecharacter blog, but were soon followed by some of the community-favourite characters, providing a wonderful surprise to followers and Remedy fans.

There's a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks providing options, depending on your preference. Personally the Hartman (hot chocolate) and Rose (banana and coffee smoothie) beverages are something that I'm definitely interested in trying. And while there's plenty of alcoholic recipes, even if you don't drink, the each recipe can still be appreciated for their connections to the characters and for the presentation of the instructions. Each post is beautifully illustrated with circular photos and a clear description of how to prepare the drinks. The style and presentation of the recipes varies with each project but this layout is a personal favourite. It's obvious from the start the amount of work and passion that Kate puts into her blog and the Alan Wake posts.

If you want to try some of the Alan Wake drinks or interested in seeing the full collection, visit HERE for all her recipes!

Kate very kindly agreed to take part in an interview talking about her work on the blog and what's in store for followers in the future:

Tell us a little about yourself!

My name is Kate, I'm 22 years old, and I live in Russia. I'm in love with fandoms and in concept of fandoms. Many people unite with each other, create something beautiful and make contacts. It's inspires me.

Your blog is a really interesting concept, how did you come up with the idea?

I created blog when season of Games of Thrones were showed. It seems, it was the sixth season. :) I saw many cocktail recipes dedicated to series and thought: "Why only GoT?". When Harry Potter ended, I saw many posts about it, including recipes. I remembered this situation and I was sure, that can find recipes with other fandoms. And if I can't find them, I will create. Also it helps me to improve my English.

How do you decide which flavours or drinks best suit which characters?

Oh, that's really interesting question. I look at the character (usually screenshots and concept arts) and reflect on him/her: their appearance, behaviour, colors, own associations. For example: Andersons are absolutely mad, and cocktail should be like this, that why I chose a mix of vodka and beer. It quickly intoxicates, but in the morning you feel terrible; this corresponds to spirit of old rockers. Cynthia [Weaver] carries a light, and so her cocktail should be light, white. Alan's stories are like shooting (I mean, full of action), and the bubbles of champagne create the effect of shooting in the mouth.

How were you introduced to Alan Wake, and what drew you to make a series of drinks inspired by Alan Wake?

Anonymous asked me to make Alan Wake recipes. :) I watched Lets Play (I'm not good in gaming and play [for] very long. For understanding plot, characters and locations I prefer to watch, and see other gamers play).

What games/drinks are you planning to feature next on your site?

I wanna make Outlast [drinks]. I like this game. :) I'm also planning to make Life is Strange; I hope, Tumblr users will appreciate them. And I will find recipes that other people do and translate them into Russian.

Thanks for your time, Kate!

Valentine's Day 2018 Wrap Up

WE MADE IT. We survived this year's Valentine's Day without eternally screaming, go us!

There are aspects of the day that I like; I like puns, I'm fond of plants and flowers, I enjoy hearing that my parents accidentally bought the same card for each other again this year, and I'm completely alright with stores overflowing with chocolate. Although the day admittedly makes me wary, like realising that it's April Fool's Day, and suddenly being very conscious that by lunchtime I will slightly hate everything as though I'm channeling Max Payne.

As I said before there are things that I definitely like about the day and here's a selection of some of those things from around the Remedy community!

Lunar New Year 2018 Community Wrap-Up

Happy Lunar New Year! This past week saw the turn of the new year celebrating the dog. Many capital cities around the globe held their own festival commemorating the new start but the internet has also been ablaze with celebration!

According to the festival website, Chinese New Year takes place over twenty three days, so there's still a long time to go before the end. The event is split into three sections; Little Year, Spring Festival, and the Lantern Festival. The Little Year takes place for eight days between the 8th-15th February and focuses on preparation. The Spring Festival begins on February 16th and ends March 2nd, and is considered to be the main celebration. Preparations for the Lantern Festival takes place from February 27th onwards, with the climax of the event on March 2nd when the festival is held. The dates and the duration of the celebration varies depending on personal choice or location. So in a sense, this post isn't so much of a wrap-up than a summary of the events so far.

In celebration, Steam ran a Lunar New Year Sale with thousands of titles available at a discounted price. The sale included a few Remedy titles in the mix including Max Payne, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, Quantum Break, and the Quantum Break Soundtrack. The sale is still going on but will end later today at 10am Pacific.

(GOG is also running a Lunar New Year Sale, but no Remedy games are part of their sale.)

Carla (now @Tcmexphony, formally @TotecTripled) also created a series of gorgeous Remedy fan art for the occasion, taking inspiration from Max from Alan Wake in honour of the Year of the Dog. Look how great it is!

Remedy's 2017 Financial Report Summary
[Relocation, "P7" Release Target, and a Third Game...]

There's nothing quite like relaxing on a quiet Sunday with a cup of coffee, cookies and...a fourteen page financial report? Okay, I'll admit, it was actually pretty interesting! There has been some discussion in the gaming community lately about Remedy working on an unannounced third title, as well as a targeted launch date for "P7".

Sites such as GamingBolt, USGamer, and Playstation Lifestyle have all written reports of a similar nature in English, but the stories have also been picked up and shared in multiple languages. Some of the companies cite other similar articles discussing the topic, but a few mention the original source; Remedy themselves.

In their 2017 Financial Statement, Remedy reveals some interesting changes and developments taking place at the studios:

Remedy
  • Number of employees is now 149 (up from 135 in 2016, 10.4% increase).
  • 61% of the team is Finnish, 39% are international developers who have relocated.
  • There are twenty different nationalities at the studios.
  • Remedy are planning to move (renovated) offices due to expansion.
  • The new offices will be located at Olarinluoma, Espoo. (Lease was signed in 2017.)

Development
  • Increased operating expenses due to P7 (partly self-financed) and strengthening of the Northlight technology development team.
  • Northlight team focused on multiplayer, AI and animation technology.
  • Preliminary preparations are underway for a third game in development

Games
  • Crossfire 2 deadlines met and the game is progressing to schedule. Development continues into 2018.
  • Crossfire 2's development plans and commercialisation is under Smilegate Entertainment's control.
  • "P7" is expected to release in 2019.
  • Alan Wake and Alan Wake's American Nightmare's revenues have increased from 2016.

The information above was taken from the English translation of the Financial Statement which is made available via the Remedy website. The 14-page English booklet is a redacted version, with some share and financial information removed from the Finnish edition, in compliance with the country's legislation.

Happy Valentine's Day 2018
[Max Payne Puns to Warn Others]

EVERYONE. The time has come. February 14th. Morally Acceptable Pun Day. Valentine's Day is a social construct but Morally Acceptable Pun Day is real and it is now and we need to be prepared. Plus I'm about 80% certain that the amount of cringing you do today adds up to 40% of your annual exercise rota.

We've done a few articles in the past to celebrate the occasion. It started with Max Payne quotes taken out of context, then Alan Wake puns, then Quantum Break puns... but we haven't actually done Max Payne puns just on their own, which is bizarre as the game is packed with them.

Similar to last year, I was up at 3am making these cards to ensure the best quality. Let's get started!

We're starting today with one of my favourite characters from the series.
Look at that guy! So happy with all the backstabbing and plotting. Job satisfaction is very important. And...
OH HEY! He's back and he bought a heart. Just ignore the dead guy on the card there, it's cool. OH! Did I say dead? I meant...erm... "not.... living"? I'm not very good at this wooing thing.

*Cough* Well. Moving on, we have Max!
There really had to be a Bullet Time reference here. Would it actually be Max Payne-themed Morally Acceptable Pun Day without a Bullet Time pun?
We have Jack Lupino! Puns. Puns. Puns. My Granddad's favourite plant was Lupines. That has absolutely no relevance to this article but now you know.

Now, to finish up the article, a retelling of the story of Max Payne.... or some version of it at least involving eagles.

GOG's Horror Deal & Chinese New Year Sale

PC Gamers! GOG is currently running two sales at the moment with hundreds of amazing titles available at a reduced price.

The first is a horror sale which includes a selection of titles such as the Amnesia series, SOMA, Knock-Knock, Deadly Premonitions: Director's Cut, and importantly for Remedy fans, Alan Wake's American Nightmare. There isn't a specific special occasion for a fear-driven sale, but I like to think it's something to do with Valentine's Day and preparing people for the horror of societal expectations and bad puns.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare is currently available at 80% off. Click HERE for the sale.

In addition to the horror deal, GOG is welcoming the year of the dog in their Chinese New Year Sale. This sale has a wonderful selection of classic titles, and offers further discounts in regular flash sales. If you're looking for new titles to play, check it out!

New Faces at Remedy [Narrative & Community]

New faces joined Remedy this week with more arriving in the following days! As there's been so many job openings these past few months, this is by no means a complete list. But I wanted to share with you some of the new members announced through the studio's social media channels.

First up, we have a new Associate Community Manager! Her name is Vida Starčević who joins the company in time for Crossfire 2 and "P7". Her prior experience includes being a writer and production assistant for a mobile game company, Nanobit Ltd and writer for gaming magazine, Reboot. You can follow her on twitter: @vidaisonline.

A department which has seen a huge amount of change these past few months is the narrative team. Anna Megill joined the company as a Senior Writer last Summer and became the studio's Narrative Lead in the autumn, following Mikko Rautalahti's departure. She announced her new team last week which has taken four months in the making.

  • Ben Gelinas is formally from BioWare having worked on titles such as Mass Effect 3, Mass Effect Andromeda, and Dragon Age Inquisition. Ben's latest game, delightfully titled Speed Dating for Ghosts, is due to come out this week!
  • Brooke Maggs joins Remedy as a writer in residence, through the Film Vic Women In Games program. She has worked on titles including The Gardens Between, Paperbark, Florence, and Earthlight.
  • Angel Leigh McCoy is joining Remedy already with a huge amount of experience in writing for games. Best known for her horror and dark fiction, she is an published author whose work stretches from novels, to video games (Guild Wars 2) and tabletop games.
  • Clay Murphy also has a vast amount of video game writing experience, covering a wide range of IPs including Blade & Soul, Diablo: Reaper of Souls, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, Heroes of the Storm, Mob Wars La Coas Nostra, Viking Clan, Zombie Slayer and Pirate Clan.
In addition to the new recruits, there's also a couple of familiar faces on the narrative team. Eevi Korhonen is Remedy's Narrative Designer and Sam Lake is Remedy's Creative Director.

Rockstar's Humble Bundle (w. Max Payne)

Rockstar is the focus for this week's Humble Bundle which is supporting the Rainforest Alliance! A number of Rockstar titles are being offered as part of the charity campaign, including all three Max Payne titles.

For those who don't know much about the project, Humble Bundle works with developers and publishers to offer game bundles, merchandise, or digital goodies in a "pay what you want" scheme. A portion of the proceeds goes to a selected charity, and you can tailor the donation so that X amount goes towards the charity and X amount goes to the developers. Each campaign is broken down into a number of tiers, starting with the "$1 or more" and increasing in price. With each new tier, you unlock more goodies (for instance buying tier three includes tier one and two).

So far over 130,000 bundles have been purchased!

"$1 or More" Tier One: Manhunt, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto III, and Max Payne. "Pay More Than The Average" Tier Two:  Bully: Scholarship Edition, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, L.A. Noire, and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. "Pay $15 or More" Tier Three: LA Nore: DLC Bundle, Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, and Max Payne 3 (plus Max Payne 3 Rockstar Pass).

The campaign runs out in just over nine days!

Poets of the Fall's New Single, False Kings, Out Now!

Poets of the Fall have released their latest single and teaser of their upcoming yet-untitled album. The single is called False Kings and was uploaded with a series of announcements and glimpses at what the band has in store for the rest of the year.

This year marks a huge milestone for the band as they celebrate their fifteenth anniversary. They're planning an international tour (Finnish tour dates currently announced) with the new album available later in the year. So if you attend you might here some tracks before anyone else! The current gigs are announced in Turku, Joensuu, Anjala, Tampere, Jämsä, Kuopio, Helsinki, Lahti, Seinäjoki, Oulu, and Kalajoki.

The main bit of news to come from the day is of course the single which had been the main focus of the teasers throughout January. False Kings is available to download or stream via a number of digital distributors such as Spotify, Amazon, iTunes and more. There's also a music video accompanying the single's launch which can be seen on the band's YouTube channel. It's pretty different from its predecessors but it has a rather cool James Bond vibe about it which fits their group really well! You can check out the video below:

Terhi Kauppi Announced as Remedy's New CFO [Updated]

Following Mika Reini's departure from the studio on January 19th, today Remedy announced that they have appointed a new CFO (Chief Financial Officer) to take up the mantle.

Terhi Kauppi will be joining the studio as the new CFO, and bringing with her a vast background in company financial management across a number of industries. She was previously CFO at  Pontos Oy and First Hop Oy, as well as holding financial admin positions at Nokia. Kauppi is currently serving as the Chief Financial Officer at Asiakastieto Group Oyj. She will be joining Remedy on May 14th 2018.

Until then, Niko Stark (Remedy's Senior Financial Controller) will continue to take on the responsibilities of the position until the end the transition.

31/5: A few quick changes for the page. Remedy has a female CFO, which is pretty awesome! I'm always excited about more women join the team, especially in a top position like this. The original source was a press release that was translated from Finnish to English. The pronoun for her/she is "hän", which is also the same word for his/he, annnnnd of course Google Translate automatically goes towards the "he/his". So I had to do a quick change of pronouns on this page. It's something that I'm going to keep an eye out for in the future.
