- Bright Falls Intro -
(JAKE wakes up in the middle of the forest, his hands caked in red mud. He looks down at them. He looks up to see the YOUNG BOY from the motel reception stare at him before running away.)
JAKE
Hey, wait!
Hey, wait!
(JAKE stands up, and looks around in bewilderment. There is shouting nearby and JAKE looks over to see the source.)
(The scene suddenly switches to JAKE driving down a familiar road in Bright Falls in search for ELLEN.)
(There's a group of journalists gathered in a circle, laughing at jokes. A newspaper rests on a table, the words "Alan's Wake" is clearly seen. The newspaper is surrounded by slides. ELLEN is within the circle. JAKE enters the room and ELLEN notices his presence.)
ELLEN
Hey
JAKE
Hey, um, can I talk to you for a second?
ELLEN
Sure.
JAKE
Somewhere private?
ELLEN
OK.
(Both characters walk away.)
(ELLEN and JAKE are sitting around a table. ELLEN is reading the notes that were taken during Hartman's interview. JAKE is starring at them.)
ELLEN
Didn't Hartman say anything?
JAKE
I don't think he knew. And this morning, I, um, woke up in the woods and my arms were just all covered in this like, red mud?
ELLEN
So what did you think happened? Making pottery in your sleep?
JAKE
Ellen, I woke up in the woods.
ELLEN
Listen, sometimes staying out here just gets in your head.
JAKE
When I'm done with this story-
ELLEN
I know.
(JAKE leaves. ELLEN sees him to his car.)
ELLEN
Call me if you need anything.
JAKE
Thanks
(They hug)
ELLEN
You know, you're right. When you're done with your story you really should go. Get back home, clear your head.
JAKE
That's why I came out here, Ellen.
ELLEN
I think you should leave.
(Meanwhile at the Motel. SAM and the YOUNG BOY to the building. A light bulb breaks. The YOUNG BOY goes inside while SAM attempts to replace the bulb. He throws the broken one in a bin with several others. There's the sound of movement in the woods and SAM returns inside to get a gun. The YOUNG BOY remains inside as SAM goes into the woods. SAM fires a warning shot. There's still movement, SAM attempts to back away but slips on the shotgun cartridge. As he falls his leg is caught on a bear trap and he laughs before a creature drags him away.)
